    The TAE 125-02-114 Engine

This airframe no longer carries the engine it left the factory with. Under the cowling is a Technify Motors diesel, run electronically, and that one change accounts for most of what makes this aeroplane different to fly — starting with the fact that its engine cannot keep running without electrical power.

    What the engine is

Technify Motors GmbH builds it, and its model designation is TAE 125-02-114. Six characteristics describe it:

    • Cylinders: 4, in line

    • Cycle: four-stroke

    • Cooling: liquid-cooled

    • Induction: turbocharged

    • Valvetrain: DOHC

    • Fuelling: direct fuel injection, common-rail technology

Its swept volume is 1991 ccm (121.5 in3), from a bore of 83 mm and a stroke of 92 mm, and it squeezes the charge at 18:1.

Everything the engine does is decided by a FADEC system.

    The two published ratings

Two ratings are given, and they bracket the useful range of the engine, so learn them as a pair:

    • Max. and Take Off: 2300 1/min, 114 kW, 155 hp, torque 473 Nm (349 ft.lbf)

    • Best Economy: 1940 1/min, 71 kW, 97 hp, torque 345 Nm (255 ft.lbf)

    Reduction gearbox

Between the engine and the propeller sits a built-in gearbox. Its ratio is i = 1.69, and it carries mechanical vibration dampening together with an overload release.

    Electrical supply

    The system runs at 14 V. Alternator performance is 1260 W, at a current of 90 A.

WARNING — An electrical power source is needed for this engine to run at all. Should the main battery and the alternator both fail, 30 minutes is the most you will get on FADEC backup battery power.

    Check yourself

    • Who makes the engine, and what is its model designation?

    • State the take-off rating in RPM, kW, hp and torque.

    • What is the compression ratio, and what is the displacement?

    • How long will the engine run if both the main battery and the alternator fail?

    • What is the reduction gearbox ratio?
