    Airspeeds for Safe Operation

The normal procedures rest on a short list of speeds. They are for a standard airplane at gross weight in standard conditions at sea level, and the section's data apply to both the two- and three-blade propellers unless a note says otherwise.

    At a glance

    • Best rate of climb92 KIAS
    • Best angle of climb76 KIAS
    • Turbulent air operating speed136 KIAS
    • Maximum flap speed115 KIAS
    • Final approach, flaps 40°, short field effort82 KIAS
    • Intentional one engine inoperative speed85 KIAS
    • Maximum demonstrated crosswind velocity17 KTS

    Pairs worth separating

    • Best rate and best angle — 92 KIAS for rate, 76 KIAS for angle.

    • Two one engine speeds — 85 KIAS is the intentional one engine inoperative speed used here; it is not the 92 KIAS best rate of climb.

The turbulent air operating speed in this list is 136 KIAS, the same figure as the maneuvering speed on the panel placard.

    • For what airplane and conditions are these speeds given?

    • What are the best rate and best angle of climb speeds?

    • What is the turbulent air operating speed?

    • What is the short field final approach speed with 40° of flap?

    • What is the maximum demonstrated crosswind velocity?

Study aid — always fly your aircraft's current AFM/POH.
