Airspeeds for Safe Operation
The normal procedures open with a short list of speeds that recur through every phase of flight. They apply to a standard airplane at gross weight, in standard conditions at sea level.
At a glance
- Best rate of climb79 KIAS
- Best angle of climb63 KIAS
- Turbulent air operating speed111 KIAS
- Maximum flap speed103 KIAS
- Landing final approach speed (flaps 40°)63 KIAS
- Maximum demonstrated crosswind17 KTS
Reading the list
Two pairs are worth memorizing together. Best angle of climb and the flaps-40° final approach speed are both 63 KIAS. The turbulent air operating speed, 111 KIAS, is the same figure as the maneuvering speed at 2440 lb.
All six figures are for a standard airplane at gross weight, in standard conditions at sea level.
